Description

First struck between 454 and 440B.C.  The Athena Owl Tetradrachm was one of the first coins to be struck with both an obverse and reverse.  The obverse features Athena, the patron goddess of Athens, and on the reverse, the Athens owl, Athena’s mascot and symbol, also known as the Minerva owl.

  • Reverse: A depiction of the “Owl of Athena,” also known as the “Owl of Minerva.”  The inscription “ΑΘΕ” is an abbreviation of ΑΘΗΝΑΙΩΝ, which may be translated as “of the Athenians,” with an outer ring of dentils surrounding.
